SUZANNE K. LOWMAN

Principal, Work Environment Associates, Inc.

 

Suzanne K. Lowman has over 30 years of experience in the field of occupational and environmental health and safety. Her focus has been the identification and control of environmental hazards. Ms. Lowman has conducted hazard assessments covering millions of square feet of space. She has designed and managed projects involving a variety of hazards including indoor air contaminants, organic and inorganic chemicals, asbestos, lead paint, mold, metals, noise and ergonomic issues. She has trained thousands of employees in the manufacturing, construction and service industries in regard to environmental exposures and hazardous substances. Ms. Lowman has appeared as an expert witness before various committees of the United States Congress, the Virginia General Assembly, EPA and OSHA on environmental safety and health matters. She has been Manager and President of Work Environment Associates, Inc., an environmental consulting firm in Richmond, Virginia since 1987.

Ms. Lowman holds a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Health and Safety (Industrial Hygiene) from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Biology from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts.

In 1988, Governor Gerald Baliles appointed Ms. Lowman to a four year term on the Virginia Safety and Health Codes Board which sets OSHA standards for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Ms. Lowman served on the Board from 1988- 1992. Governor L. Douglas Wilder re-appointed Ms. Lowman to the Board in 1992 and she served until 1996. Governor George Allen re-appointed her to an additional four year term in 1996. Her total years service on the Board was 12 years. Ms. Lowman was Chairman of the Virginia Safety and Health Codes Board in the year 1999 - 2000.

In 2003, Governor Mark Warner appointed Ms. Lowman to the Virginia Board for Asbestos, Lead and Home Inspectors. The Board promulgates regulations governing environmental professionals.

Ms. Lowman is a Past President of the Central Virginia Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and currently serves on its Board as a Director. She has also served on the Board of the American Lung Association of Virginia. Ms. Lowman is a Virginia asbestos project designer, asbestos project monitor, and asbestos inspector/ management planner. She is also a Virginia licensed lead inspector, lead risk assessor, lead project designer .
